Cover 1: Growth
Through Music, I Grew
A long time ago, I lost a friend. No, they didn’t die, but our paths diverged. I was young, only 11 or 12, but it tore me up a bit emotionally. Like many, at this point in my life I was a kid trying to figure out how to cope with a lot of things. My answer would come late one night on a drive home from a soccer game. I was in the back of my grandfather’s van. We’d lost, it was raining, and I was hungry. Needless to say, I was a pretty bummed out kid. As I stared out the window, I found myself actually paying attention to the lyrics of what I was listening to. It was a song I’d discovered through edits of tv shows on Youtube, but something about that listen, that moment, and the state I was in made everything come together. For the first time I can remember, I heard a song and was able to relate to it; to find some form of consolation in its words. Through them, I was able to put the bad parts of my day aside and I found myself reflecting on the friend I’d lost. I didn’t know how to feel, but as the song progressed, each resonating statement would give me the words to decipher how I felt. I lost a friend. I missed them, but that day I realized I could continue on. I had found a place that understood. Because of a song, I was able to grow.
