Spreading Kindness Through Design
For my seminar thesis project, I would like to focus on the importance of kindness. This project is not intended to persuade people to be kind but instead to spread awareness about the importance of kindness, specifically through situations associated with psychology. I have gathered real life stories of kindness to investigate where kindness could be found and what kindness would mean to others. From there, I created a zine called “Random Acts of Kindness” that contains graphics of hand gestures that relate to kindness, such as a heart, which is a universal symbol of kindness, a lending hand, and holding hands. Through this research, I have learned that random acts of kindness can not only be actions made but also messages that touch people.
Currently, I am experimenting with collages using photos from magazines and quotes from Orly Wahba’s book, “Kindness Boomerang: How to Save the World (and Yourself) Through 365 Daily Acts” that would somehow express kindness. In these collages, I am combining photos in groups of two with a quote from Orly Wahba’s book to create a meaning related to kindness. My goal for this project is to explore many ways to create different art projects to visually express the importance of kindness.

Spreading Kindness Through Design
The topic for my Senior Design Seminar thesis project will be based on spreading kindness through design. This project is not intended to persuade people to be kind but instead to spread awareness about the importance of kindness, specifically the importance of kindness through situations associated with psychology. When it comes to the research process of this project, I have read books and articles that focus on the importance of kindness through psychology and have written down notes that captured my interest from the readings. Also, I have gathered stories of kindness from friends and family to investigate where kindness could be found and what kindness means to others. From there, I would be able to incorporate all of my research and stories into a series of art projects to express the importance of kindness.
As someone who is kind and thinks about others first, I would want others to see the benefits of spreading awareness about the importance of kindness, as it benefits others psychologically and physically. Through my research from readings and stories about kindness from my friends and family, I have learned that random acts of kindness can not only be actions made but also messages that touch people. With the kindness stories I gathered, I have created a zine called “Random Acts of Kindness” that contains graphics of hand gestures that relate to kindness, such as a heart, which is a universal symbol of kindness, a lending hand, and holding hands.
Currently, I am experimenting with collages using photos from magazines I had no investment in and quotes from Orly Wahba’s book, “Kindness Boomerang: How to Save the World (and Yourself) Through 365 Daily Acts” that would create a meaning to kindness. In these collages, I am combining photos in groups of two with a quote from Orly Wahba’s book to create a meaning related to kindness. Spreading Kindness through Design
The topic for my Senior Design Seminar thesis project will be based on spreading kindness through design. This project is not intended to persuade people to be kind but instead to spread awareness about the importance of kindness. When it comes to the research process of this project, I will research articles that focus on the philosophy and the importance of kindness. Not only are some articles associated with kindness, but there are also public figures, such as Jimmy Darts, Orly Wahba, Corita Kent, and Naomi Shihab Nye, who are associated with kindness that would be able to help me investigate the importance of kindness. From there, I would be able to incorporate all of my research into a series of art projects to express the importance of kindness.
As someone who is kind and thinks about others first, I would want others to see the benefits of spreading awareness about the importance of kindness through this topic. The importance of kindness would also be beneficial to others psychologically and physically. Through my own experiences of random acts of kindness, I would also want to inspire others to treat others the way they would like to be treated. Therefore, these are the reasons why I am intrigued to pursue this topic for my thesis project. I hope that this project will educate and inspire people about the importance of kindness.
When it comes to the research methods for this project, I plan on spreading awareness about the importance of kindness through a series of art projects. These projects will be based on media that I have learned throughout my time at Montserrat College of Art, such as creating zines, typographic posters, collages, and more. The zines that I plan on creating for this project would have short stories about experiences of random acts of kindness. The typographic posters I plan on designing would have messages or contain excerpts from Orly Wahba’s book, Kindness Boomerang: How to Save the World (and Yourself) Through 365 Daily Acts, that express kindness. The colleges that I plan on making would either consist of messages expressing kindness, quotes from Jimmy Darts’ random acts of kindness videos, or photography that expresses kindness.
