Calculating the Conscience

Music, emotion, and representations of sound are central to the foundation of what I’m doing. Over the past summer, I completed and released a new EP under my music project, Imperfect Algorithm. As of August 26th, the EP is live on Spotify and other platforms. These 3 new tracks have since become the basis of my studies into the crossover between music and emotion.

I’ve been pairing the audio with various images and observing what (if any) changes in emotion or reactions can be observed. Along with this, I’ve been looking at various objective points of the tracks; the shapes of the waveform, the tablature for what each instrument is playing, and various forms of mathematical musical notation. With this, I’ve discovered something of a duality in looking at music as purely emotional versus purely logical. Constants form where one emotion seems to correlate with a specific technique, tone, or writing choice. Perhaps my thesis is on a path of examining this area where math, music, and emotions interplay with each other. Furthermore, I’ve left myself with the question “if the math is changed, does the emotion change?”

Various pieces are coming together. So far, I have an audio and visual piece in the works, a combination of the music and the emotion. With this, my next logical step seems to be combining mathematical representations of the audio with each of these things to see what parallels can be drawn.

The main idea here as an analysis of music and how the emotions behind a track may all be calculated decisions.

If I’m being honest, having such freedom with a project is both welcome and terrifying. I’ve been giving it a lot of thought, but still can’t seem to figure out a completely solid idea. That being said, I think my most pertinent quality as a designer is my diverse and somewhat odd skillset. As I’ve told many teachers, I’m a musician primarily. My sophomore studio project was literally just making music (and album art to go with it). It’s an unconventional thing to bring up in graphic design for sure, but that’s exactly what I find somewhat interesting. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been thinking a lot about the many ways that design and music connect. For example, based on a band’s logo, there’s a lot that you can tell about the style of music that they may play. Even the simplest of typographic choices can have a large effect on the initial perception of a piece of music. The same is true for album art and illustration. Quite handily, I’m also confident in my illustration skills.

With this in mind, the general idea of my plan is to create songs, illustrations, and typography/design work meant to connect with each other, or perhaps deliberately not. Along with this, I want to tie an emotion into each piece. Emotion is something that has heavy ties to all three of these forms of expression. Additionally, it's something that everyone experiences. There’s even a good deal of color theory that could be brought into the pieces, such as anger and the color red or sadness and the color blue. Being that my website’s tagline is “Graphic Design, Illustration, Loud Guitars,” I feel like something along these lines could be the perfect thing to feature on my website, especially since I want to work in the field of music, including doing design work for musicians/bands, especially within heavier genres of music where themes feature diverse emotions.
