Creation of Adam - Two Ideas

Since Tuesday, I've delved a little more into sketching for my Creation of Adam-inspired piece. I have two main ideas at the moment and I'm stuck between the two right now but this weekend I'm going to embrace the idea of repetition and draw each one out a few more times to hopefully get the ideas a little more solidified and maybe make a decision (or even combine the two)!

This idea (labeled as A) leans into the theory that the reddish fabric which surrounds God in the original painting is actually meant to resemble a uterus. I was thinking about making "God" visibly pregnant or with a C-section scar on her belly. The goal of this idea would be to convey love and support between a parent (God) and their queer offspring (Adam) through the literal act of creating them. As of now, I'm leaning more toward my second idea...

This idea (labeled B) would depict self-love through creation or recreation. The two figures represent one person being in touch with the holiness of their identity. I feel that this may be harder to represent visually (though my title idea is "The Creation of Self" which may help) but I feel that this idea gets across what I want to communicate a little better. There is another theory about Michelangelo's original that the reddish cloth is representative of an anatomically accurate human brain... I may lean into that for this one, but I'm also considering representing Heaven in a number of other ways. Ultimately my goal is to communicate that the two people are actually one person and it is more of a visualization of an internal, personal event.

A few things that I know for sure I want to have in the final piece:
  • the two hands touching/holding each other - in the original, they are just barely separated which represents the impossibility of man achieving "God status" or being truly free of sin... in mine, I want to represent a level of comfort or mentoring between the two individuals by showing them physically touching.
  • earth being lush - the original depicts the Earth as fairly sparse with only flat swaths of green, blue, and brown, but in my piece, I'd like to make the Earth lush and full of plant life. I intend to include flowers such as lavender which have meaning in the queer community. I may also put flowers or plant life surrounding God. This to me represents more beauty and the idea of finding "Heaven on Earth", or Heaven within oneself.
  • nudity - I intend to keep Adam fully nude, and I may depict God with some degree of nudity (though not completely nude). I will be changing their anatomy/genders and adding elements of realness such as body hair, scars, birthmarks, etc. in order to humanize them. Michelangelo used the ideal male form in his work but only a very tiny percentage of our population is actually represented by that, and it certainly doesn't include most trans/queer people... So I'd like to switch it up and depict these characters as real people.
  • background - the original piece has a plain whitewashed background. In mine, I'd like to add a lot of colors, perhaps some fluffy yellow clouds in order to express beauty and divinity as much as possible.
My goal right now is to decide on one idea and revamp and finalize it so I can start thinking about working on the actual thing! I think having a studio space will be incredibly useful once I get to this stage...
