Variations of Heart Pieces

I have revisited some of the backgrounds I used before to play around with variations of the heart pieces. The elements in each heart piece are cut-outs of the Mario Bros. outfits, which would relate to each video game cover background below.

New Haikus and Designs

I noticed that I have been getting a lot more picky with how the text works together. So picky to the point where I will take an eternity on one page moving around the type until I'm satisfied with how it looks. Then I'll go back to edit it again and not be happy with how it turns out. Working on future pages, I think I should just get as many pages done as I can AND THEN go back to pick on the smaller details because I feel like I could be using my time more efficiently than I am now. 

We have paint! + sketch for next piece

I was able to get supplies over the weekend and start painting! In the underpainting stage. Also learned that the oil medium I have is no good, so gotta go out and get some linseed oil instead.

Also started on some sketches for my next piece which will be inspired by Madonna and Child paintings. There are literally thousands and thousands of versions of this subject made throughout history so unlike my Creation of Adam piece, there's no direct reference by one artist, but the composition is generally the same across all its forms. I want mine to depict a drag queen in full makeup and outfit holding their baby! Here is my very basic sketch:

...Definitely need to work on my skill level when it comes to drawing babies... ignore it for now :)

More Nintendo Heart Collage Backgrounds

Here are some more variations of one of my comic-con heart collages using backgrounds that are made up of pieces from photographs of different video game covers that were signed by Charles Martinet, the voice of the Mario Bros.

 

I made a lot of scrap paper these past couple of days.

I've been working away on the recipes/ingredient of books... book

I still have to import in the 1 to 1 ratio example page layouts of the paragraph and grep styles listed on the given book "ingredient label" I decided to add the actual fonts used in each book to each label. Transcribing the paragraph styles took much longer than expected as I couldn't find a way to copy and paste them from the Paragraph Styles settings tab in InDesign.

I think I found a solution for a cover or dust jacket image to go with the ingredients motif without using book interiors.

I photographed, then grayscaled our household ingredient cards with all their mistakes and blemishes and collaged them at 60% transparency before of setting two sets at 5% on top. After adding temporary title text I felt the text needed to stand out more and added a layer of white at 10% between the image and text to avoid needing a color bar or a drop shadow.

The original plan was to print this book as a square 8.5in or 9in that would allow me to have a 1 to 1 representation of pages examples in the book, most examples would intentionally bleed off the bottom of the page. After seeing the booklet printed at 5" I'm reconsidering the size, but keep the proportions of text and example page bleeding off intact. The purpose of the book is not so much to read the text but get a feel of what the layouts and typography combination look and feel like on a page.

- rectangle is now a trapezoid, and has two thinner wooden rectangles screwed into the bottom to act as platforms

Little Edits

I made another version of the "More" page with all the text as one unit rather than two. I included both of them for comparison. I made the "Clock" graphic larger and the text smaller and more spread out. For the "Vortex" page I lined up the baseline of the text with the top of the V. I still want to do more experimenting with it along with the other pages.
